Coffin

I really did not plan on building a new coffin for 2007. My neighbor and I dropped the one I had and it splintered into a thousand pieces. So with that, the build follows! I mean my buddy Drac needs a place to stay, right!

First off I purchased the materials. Three 1"x4"x12' boards. Which I ripped down to 1"x2" with my table saw. Three pieces of luan and corner molding.

I needed a total of six 52" lengths, six 18" lengths, three 17" lengths & three 15" lengths. I am not a master carpenter but I was able to figure out the ??.? degrees for each miter cut and make them work.

See! I used flat brackets and liquid nails to hold the frames together. I put 12" spacers (ribs) in-between the  top and bottom to get the height I wanted. I also spray painted any areas that would be visible on the coffin when finished now so I would not get any on the luan later in the build. I also used flat black so that the high gloss urethane would gloss the black up even more.

I also put the top together with the flat brackets and liquid nails with the exception of using a dremel plunge router so the flat brackets so the top would fit flush with the luan skin.  I then began putting the luan on the skeleton using 3/4" brads and liquid nails.

After assembling the top and bottom I stained them with red chestnut stain. I then spray painted wood scroll pieces from MICHAELS with flat black. After they were dry I mounted them on the coffin.

I then gave the top and bottom three coats of high gloss urethane with a sanding of 220 grit sand paper between the first and second coats

I then lined the coffin with some silky looking fabric I found cheap and there you have it. A new coffin for 2007.
