CEMETARY GATES

NEW FOR 2007

One of the bigger projects I wanted to accomplish in 2007 was to add pillars to my cemetery gate & fence. I wanted to make them appear to have withstood the test of time, look old and above all spooky. So I sat down and drew out a couple sketches and decided on the ones to build.

The bottom and the top are made from 1"x2" pine. The sides (long pieces) are made from 1"x1" pine. They are held together with drywall screws and liquid nails.

I placed boards where the fence and gate would attach to the pillars. I used "L" brackets that I picked up from a local Drug Mart to attach them.

This is another example of how I used the boards to mount the fence and gates and give strength to the pillars as well. Also when adhering the foam to the skeleton or frame use a adhesive that is designed for use with foam board. Many adhesives will dissolve foam board and that can be a big ol'e mess.

The tops were easy to build. I just cake stacked the tops the way I wanted them to be. I used foam board adhesive and caulked around each layer. Then toped them off with Gargoyles I purchased at Target for 10 Bucks apiece.

Next to make sure that everything fit I put it all together. Any adjustments can still be made at this point without damaging the work. Also I placed cove on the base of each pillar.

I used wood putty to fill in any spaces, seams or screw heads. Then sanded them smooth.

A coat of light grey exterior paint. I picked up the paint from the oop's shelf at the Home Depot for $5.00 bucks. Because of the pink foam I gave them each two coats.

I hand carved the plaque and used wood accents that I purchased at MICHAELS craft store to create the theme of my Cemetary.

Cemetery of the living dead

I then placed the sign on the left pillar with foam board adhesive and drywall screws.

For the pillar on the right I made just the upper left corner of a plaque and darkened the area where a plaque once was. This was a great illusion of age. and wella I now have two very cool pillars.

With the right lighting the gargoyles atop the pillars really add to the appearance of my cemetery.

Even in daylight They look like real stone!
